Five Boulder/Broomfield County Rotary Clubs combined to obtain a Rotary International Matching Grant to provide a mobile dental van and two portable dental units for use by dentists from the Boulder/Broomfield County Dental Society (and the Colorado Dental Association) to provide dental services to the many un-served residents of Mante, Mexico. Robert Murphy, D.D.S. and Joe Mazzola, D.D.S. have completed the preliminary missions. Now, the stage is set for regular 1-2 week volunteer missions by Colorado dentists and dental hygienists.

Ideas Formulated Concerning the Boulder-Mante Dental Volunteer Program:
1) One or two dentists will go to Mante for a 1-2 week dental volunteer mission. There might be 3-4 of these per year. They (the dentists) will provide their own transportation to and from Tampico International Airport. A representative from Mante will meet the dentists at the Tampico Airport, transport them to Mante. One dentist might spend his/her week with Jean Louis Lacaille in the El Cielo region while the other will work side-by-side with a DIF dentist, probably in the dental van providing dental services to the area villages surrounding Mante.
2) The city of Mante will provide board and room (food and housing) for the dentist working in and around Mante. Jean Louis will provide the same for the dentist serving the mountainous areas around Mante. Eventually, we hope that Mante-area dentists will provide board and room for the visiting dentists. It will take time to establish this rapport.
3) The City of Mante will provide our visiting dentists an assistant and translator (this can be the same person) in the Mante area. Jean Louis will be our translator/assistant in the mountain villages.
4) The visiting dentists will be provided (by the city of Mante) the same supplies (dental burs, gloves, face masks, restorative materials, etc.) as used by their Mante dental counterparts.
This is simply an initial format. We are open to your suggestions. |
